The White Bay Power Station presently serves as an abandoned landmark of Sydney's industrial age in the early and mid-twentieth century, but from 1917 to 1984, the station played an integral role in maintaining Sydney's electricity demands. The White Bay Power Station was built between 1912 and 1917 by the NSW Railway commissioners to help maintain the expansion of public transport in Sydney. White Bay Power Station was the longest functioning power station in Sydney at the time and is now one of the best representations of Sydney's industrial age and evolution in terms of energy production and use through the means of coal.
My vision
My vision of development for the White Bay Power Station is of a self-sustaining green space and leisure area on the exterior and retail and service technology start-ups and eateries on the interior. The project bases its main features on clean energy and the environment. Throughout the station, plaques or information stations can be installed which explain the historical value and aspects of the power station and its redevelopment. My plan includes hydrogen fuel cells as one of its primary aspects, housed inside parts of the White Bay Power Station which could sustain the facilities. Essentially a Hydrogen Fuel Cell is a medium of energy production in which hydrogen can be used to produce energy with the only by-products being pure water and heat. As well as this, solar panels can be installed on the west side of the station. The green space would be situated in the area around the station and would be sustained by the excess water produced by the fuel cells.
Aims of renewal plan
There are two primary aims of the renewal plan. One is centred around the environment we live in, to integrate nature into an urban environment. The other is to encourage potential innovators to come up with and innovate on clean energy production methods in order to preserve the environment. This is done through the integration of a clean energy source in the building itself, which aims to motivate potential innovators to improve the clean energy market.
